GPU memory

Hello everyone, in what way is GPU memory used in rendering? I’m thinking of replacing my RTX 2060 and would like to know if the KS uses all available memory. Will a 12Gb GPU perform better than an 8Gb one, speed gain?

If it’s about speed the amount of CUDA cores count. A 2060 has 1920 so if you would change it for a 2080 Ti which has 4352 the speed will be about double . The 11GB of memory I think of the 2080 Ti will help to be able to render larger scenes or scenes with higher resolution of textures.

You can also keep the current 2060 and put an extra 2080Ti in for example. That gives you 6272 CUDA cores so around triple the speed of what you have. The only thing is that the usable memory will be the memory of the card with least memory, so the 8GB of the 2060.

I had a long time a 2080 Ti combined with a 1070. That works perfect but also 8GB available memory because the 1070. No I’ve a 3090 which has 10496 CUDA cores and I still have to check if the 2080 Ti will fit as well since those CUDA cores are always welcome. But that card is actually bigger than the 3090 I have so still have to test it. My mainboard has the PCI slots on places which are not ideal so the 2080Ti would be a few mm’s below the 3090 which make a nice oven

Maybe I’ve to look for another second handed mainboard or put it vertically but than the 2080Ti will be really close to the side panel. Anyway, the memory helps for bigger scene, cuda cores for speed.
